Act of Kindness Club
The Act of Kindness Club is all about creating moments that make someone’s day a little brighter. Students come together to plan and lead meaningful projects that support classmates, families, and the broader community. From organizing donation drives to launching schoolwide kindness initiatives, this student-run group is powered by young leaders who want to make a real difference inside our school and beyond its walls.
HFCA REDgen Podcast
REDgen is a student-led, peer-to-peer mental health awareness group where Peer Leaders learn skills to support their own well-being and help others do the same. Through conversations, storytelling, and community-focused discussions, our REDgen students use their voices to promote mental wellness and create a more supportive school environment for everyone.
The National Junior Arts Society
The National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS) is a special program created by the National Art Education Association to celebrate middle school artists who go above and beyond in creativity, skill, and dedication. NJAHS members set the bar high—they push themselves to grow as artists, show leadership through service, and help make the visual arts shine throughout our school and community. To be considered, students must be in middle school, have completed at least one semester of art, and maintain a “B” or higher in their art and other classes. Membership is by invitation and is awarded to students who demonstrate strong artistic talent, commitment, positive character, and a willingness to contribute to the art community. Joining NJAHS is not just an honor—it’s an opportunity for young artists to develop their voices, showcase their work, and be recognized for their passion and excellence in the visual arts.
Recently, the club took part in a special community project by helping decorate a holiday tree at Cathedral Square Park. This hands-on experience allowed students to showcase their creativity while contributing to a public display that celebrates the season.
Roaring Gears Robotics
The HFCA Robotics Team provides students with hands on experience in engineering, programming, and teamwork through competitive robotics. Robotics has been offered to HFCA students for five years, initially serving high school students for the past four years and expanding to include middle school students this year. This expansion allows younger learners to explore STEM in an engaging and real-world setting.
The team is led by Lead Mentor Richaad Reed, a Board Member of HFCA, and supported by mentors Dr. Hiwot Abebe and Kevin Severs. Faculty mentors Gwen Miner and Malicia Holifield work closely with students throughout the season. The team also benefits from guidance provided by a student advisor from MSOE, who offers additional technical support and mentorship.
Students collaborate to design, build, and refine robots while developing problem-solving skills, communication, and teamwork. The Robotics Team meets on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the MSOE STEM Center.
This past weekend, the team competed at the Thumbwars competition in New Berlin. The students showed clear improvement over last season and finished 25th out of 27 teams. Standout moments included strong communication within the team and positive collaboration with other schools, highlighting the team’s commitment to learning, sportsmanship, and growth.
Robotics is a fun and challenging experience that allows students to apply classroom learning to real-world problems, build confidence, and connect with peers who share an interest in technology and innovation.
