For us, the holidays weren’t just about what was under the tree.
This season, HFCA scholars were reminded that some of the most meaningful gifts don’t come with wrapping paper. They come from time, care, and the choice to lift others up.
Before winter break, a group of middle school students spent time at Northcott Neighborhood House, helping wrap gifts for families across the community who needed a little extra support to make ends meet.
From baby items and children’s toys to gifts for teens, each package represented more than a present. It was an act of kindness, a moment of relief, and a reminder that community shows up, especially when it matters most. Scholars learned firsthand how small actions can make a big difference, and how generosity is about noticing the needs of others.
At the same time, our high school students were spreading gratitude across the city. With holiday cookies and handwritten notes of thanks in hand, they visited organizations that have supported Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy throughout the year.
Their goal was simple but powerful. Say thank you. Thank you for investing time, resources, and belief. Thank you for adding value. Thank you for showing our scholars what is possible when people choose to show up for each other.
These experiences are more than seasonal acts of service. They are lessons in leadership, character, and community. Excellence is not limited to what happens in the classroom or on the court. It lives in service, in relationships, and in understanding the impact one can have beyond themselves.
