Dear HFCA Supporters,
My name is Shyann, and I am currently a junior. I’m actually not from Milwaukee. I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York. I first learned about HFCA through my mom. A week later, I started my freshman year, which took place in the old building that’s now the middle school.
During my sophomore year, I became more social and started talking to more people. I try to be cordial with everyone, and over time, I’ve built meaningful connections with many of my peers. I joined the track team and stayed for a year. While I didn’t take it too seriously, I really enjoyed the training and especially the 50-meter dash.
Recently, I joined the robotics team with Mr. Richaad Reed, who is an HFCA board member and supportive figure at HFCA. I am a coder on the team. At first, I was afraid of coding, but I got the hang of it since a lot of the structure was already laid out. I even got the chance to drive one of the robots.
Toward the end of sophomore year, I was elected class representative. One of the best parts of that role has been helping plan prom. Right now, we’re working on managing the budget and talking with teachers and staff about things like spirit days and Minga points. I’m also the Vice President of the HFCA Student Support Foundation. We help fund other clubs and organize community service events. Most of our support comes from staff and seniors, and one of our recent projects was helping out with the Black History Month Bingo event.
I’m really enjoying the college tour experiences I’ve had so far. I’m currently taking two dual enrollment classes at UWM: Intro to Psychology and Intro to Children’s and Young Adult Literature. These courses are helping me earn college credits and gain valuable experience. I also applied and was recently accepted to the Upward Bound summer program at Marquette University. One of the colleges on my list to attend includes Spelman, an all-girls HBCU that I’m excited to learn more about.
Outside of HFCA, I spend a lot of time helping out with my siblings since I’m the oldest. I love my family and it’s rewarding to be there for them. In my free time, I enjoy playing Sonic the Hedgehog.
Just before spring break, I went on a college tour trip to Minnesota. My highlights were visiting the Mall of America, touring the University of Minnesota, shopping, and the Build-A-Bear workshop.
My dream is to become either a lawyer or a psychologist. I’ve always loved helping people with their problems and giving advice. Five years from now, I see myself financially stable, happy in my career, and achieving my goals.
Thank you supporters for helping HFCA thrive and supporting its mission for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Shyann
