Dear HFCA Supporters,
My name is Kyler, and I’m a freshman at HFCA. One of the main reasons I chose to come here is because of my brother—who goes to HFCA right now. He always talked about how great the learning program is. That stuck with me, especially since I’ve always wanted to go to college. I knew this school would help prepare me for that.
Being a freshman hasn’t been easy. Some classes are harder than others, and HFCA really expects a lot from us. But I’ve been pushing through. Honestly, I didn’t like algebra at first, but it’s grown on me over time. One thing that helps me stay grounded is my friends here—they’ve made a big difference.
Right now, I’m still figuring out what I want to do for a career, but I do know that I want to go to college after I graduate. Recently, I met with one of the college advisors at HFCA. I ended up applying and getting accepted into the Earn and Learn program right away. I’ll be earning a $2,400 stipend while working 20 hours a week for 7 weeks at local nonprofits, small businesses, or community organizations. The program also gives us hands-on experience in careers that are in high demand, which I think is really going to help me out.
As part of onboarding, I’ll be trained in work readiness and financial literacy. Which are stuff like communication, time management, professionalism, and money skills. I know these things will help me not just in college but in life in general.
On top of that, I also got hired by a church in Milwaukee. They pay youth $14 an hour to help younger kids with reading. My big goal this summer is to save up enough money to buy a car by junior year.
Outside of school, I play basketball in the AAU League. We actually just won one of our tournaments on Saturday, April 19th, and we’ve got another game coming up on May 2nd in Chicago.
Thanks for all your support. I’m looking forward to growing more during my time here at HFCA.
Sincerely,
Kyler
